History of PBC

Brief History of Portsmouth Badminton Club

In the early 1960s badminton was thriving in the Portsmouth area. In Portsmouth there were thirteen leagues plus a Churches league, with another three leagues in Havant.

Milton Congregational Badminton Club was one of the many clubs who played in the Churches league using the courts in the local church halls. This club combined with Nomadic Badminton Club, which had teams in the Portsmouth leagues to form Milton Nomadic Badminton Club, MNBC.

By the mid 1970s MNBC had three club nights each week; Tuesday and Wednesday evenings were in Drayton Road school, playing on one court. This court was on the upper floor of the school with a lovely sprung wooden floor. Harry was the caretaker and it wasn't unknown for matches to last until after midnight, quite how MNBC managed to persuade Harry to let the club play so late in the evening was all down to the personal skills of the club chairman, Paul Flynn. Drayton Road school has since been demolished.

Friday evenings were at Springfield School in Cosham where there were three courts followed by a drink in Uncle Tom's cabin on Havant Road, this has also been demolished.

For a while MNBC played on Thursday nights in a purple walled sports hall just off the Eastern Road, this site is now part of Portsmouth College, the awful purple walled sports hall has long been knocked down.

In the early 1990s MNBC moved to its current venue in the Sports Hall of Portsmouth Grammar School, originally playing one night per week but as space became available MNBC has had two nights of badminton on Monday and Friday using four courts in the winter season and Monday nights only in the summer season.

The name change from MNBC to Portsmouth Badminton Club took place in 2011 and reflects where the club plays and its continuing contribution to the development of badminton within the city.

And the 2019 winners of the Gudge Cup are...…… Paula and Adam

Kay Gudgeon presented the Gudge Cup to the winners of this year's mixed doubles American tournament held at PGS last Friday. Paula and Adam are new members to the club this year so it's a pleasure to see a new generation of players joining Portsmouth Badminton Club.

The runners up were Shraddha and Pritesh who finished one point behind the winners. Kay presented them with their plate trophies.

Third and fourth places were keenly contested, a spread of five points separating the top four pairs.

Everyone retired to the bar where the club provided a free drink and lots of food prepared by Andrew and Tom. Andrew's "flappies", a chocolate and orange flapjack, and Tom's warm sausage rolls were devoured with relish.

There was a raffle, with free entry, and everyone went home with a prize, thanks to the generous donations made by club members.

Andrew deserves a special mention and thanks for all the hard work he put in to organise the tournament and to run it during the evening. Another successful tournament completed.
